About
Kevin Hartley
For 30 years, I have been obsessed with a single, billion-dollar question: Why do human beings prefer one option over another? My career hasn’t been a job; it has been a 30-year experiment in answering that question. I discovered that business isn’t finance—it’s biology.
My journey to becoming the “Architect of Preference” began by disrupting a stagnant legacy industry. At Johns Manville (a Berkshire Hathaway company), I didn’t just sell insulation; I removed the “pain chemicals” from the user experience. We introduced formaldehyde-free insulation and the “Pro-pack bats” system—a product so preferred by consumers that it tripled our sales overnight. This was my first lesson in the biology of the buy: if you remove the toxins, you unlock the growth.
I took that insight and leaped into the high-stakes world of serial entrepreneurship. I founded Green Mountain Energy, creating the world’s first deregulated electricity brand from scratch. We didn’t just sell power; we sold choice. I architected three distinct “electricity blends”—a 100% Wind blend for the future, a Hydro/Solar blend, and a value-driven Natural Gas/Hydro blend. This strategy grew us into the fastest-growing company in Vermont’s history, leading to a $110 million exit to British Petroleum.
Following that exit, I launched KH Innovations, where I brought this “Founder’s Speed” to the world’s largest corporate giants. I guided industry leaders like BMW, GM, 3M, Wells Fargo, DUNKIN, Invisalign, and Bank of America through transformative innovations, helping them turn around stagnant divisions by reconnecting with the core of human preference.
Then, I took on my biggest challenge yet: scaling the Fortune 500 from the inside. As the Chief Innovation and Strategy Officer at Keurig Green Mountain, I led “Innovation Horizons,” transforming the brand from a regional roaster into a $14 billion global leader. I masterminded the “razor/razor blade” model that placed brewers in over 43 million homes. We didn’t just launch machines; we focused on “Galleriable” aesthetics and total ecosystem innovation—from Keurig Cold and Keurig Baby to Keurig Water. This era included orchestrating the $2 billion partnership with Coca-Cola and mastering the journey from inception to commercialization.
Today, I am disrupting the very category I helped build. With Cambio Roasters, I launched the world’s first and only 100% aluminum coffee pod brand. This is the pinnacle of “ESG-driven innovation”—replacing the plastic waste of the industry with a circular economy solution. By using a zero-oxygen aluminum seal, we protect organic coffee from light and moisture, proving that sustainability and convenience can converge without compromise.
Through this rare “Hybrid” career—amassing over 15 patents and creating billions in value—I developed The Rx of Preference. This groundbreaking methodology applies neuroscience to business strategy, teaching that every interaction is a “drug delivery” mechanism that either drives addiction to your brand or rejection of it.
As a board member, advisor, and keynote speaker, I provide the “Founder-to-Fortune” playbook. I help leaders break free from the “Tall Poppy Syndrome” that kills innovation, teaching them how to treat business as “High-Stakes Art” and secure their place as the market’s preferred choice.
